Abbaye Royale, St. Jean d'Angely

The Abbaye Royale is at the centre of St. Jean d'Angely, a small town just off the A10 exit 14, a little to the north of Cognac, in the Charentes area. The Abbaye can be seen from the approach road, and it is just a matter of heading towards it.

The reception office is on the second floor and is open until 6 pm.

Rooms with shower and toilet are available with 1 to 4 single beds for around 50 Euros a night.  The quiet rooms are those facing on to the courtyard.  Unlike many reasonably-priced hotels (IBIS etc) there is no limit on the number of children permitted in each room.

After parking in the courtyard a couple of times, I have now found that the local council forbid all vehicles from entering.  Although there is a good (free at night) parking area on the east side of the abbaye, this policy tends to rule out the Abbaye for owners of motorcycles and exotic cars - although the town is quiet and it would be doubtful if any problems would arise.

It is an old abbey, and as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, rather than a hotel, it does not offer food. Eating in the rooms is expressly forbidden.

There are, however, several good restaurants, a bar offering breakfasts, and a baker for DIY breakfasts, all just outside the door. The town centre even has that rarety in France - an Indian restaurant!
