After running a 225xe (7 KW) for 2.5 years, last March I bought a 2021 X1 25e (10 KW). At that time, in continuous cold weather, I was getting an E-range of up to 26 mph. Now, in very warm weather I am repeatedly only getting 25 mph, when it should be up to 30 mph, on a complete 10 KW charge from my Zappi charger. Could anyone kindly explain

why this might be, as range should be greater in warmer temperatures.

Do you mean 25 / 26 miles? Even 30 miles would be pretty pathetic . . .

Great range on its engine, but not worth bothering about on the battery, unless it is kept as a reserve in case of running out of fuel!

Your 25/26 miles on the battery is only 10% less than BMW's figure, which is an 'acceptable' difference - like the difference between manufacturer's and user's fuel consumption figures.

Regarding the 1 mile difference you have noted between winter and summer use, there are so many factors which could influence this, from driving conditions, use of lights and aircon etc to the battery temperature. In any car, it is unreasonable to expect the same range in all conditions, no matter how much you try to keep a uniform driving style.

Even using a cruise control will not give the best range or fuel consumption, as it cannot anticipate load requirements caused by gradients etc. A 1 mile range difference is nothing to worry about.

In any case, why do you think that the range should be better in warm weather? Most electric devices work better when cold, particularly batteries . . .

Thanks for your full response, Mike. I appreciate there are many factors which can influence the e-range when the car is in actual motion. However what I was talking about was when the car has completed its charge overnight and has not yet been driven and the indicated e-range on the display.

Have you ever checked the actual fuel consumption when running only on petrol? I bet it is somewhat less than the maker's figure, which will be obtained in unrealistic conditions.

It is possible that your charger is set to go into trickle charge mode at slightly less than the maximum - it would be interesting to give the car a full charge using a different charger - but I bet it will still be less than the maker's figures . . . all car manufacturers lie about such things!

Hi Mike, As a long retired, very low mileage driver, trying to measure my petrol range would take a month of Sundays. My 2.5 years with the 225xe, where there was always a marked difference between winter and summer fully charged battery e-range indicated mileage projections, both on the dash display and the BMW App, and prior to driving anywhere, has piqued my interest as to why there isn't a similar differential with my X125e. Both my Zappi charger app (also used with the 225xe) and the BMW app show the X1 battery is getting its full 10 kWh charge. I do appreciate that manufacturers invariably inflate their performance statistics. I can't really accept accept that batteries perform better in colder weather. From what I've read and been told, the general consensus is that they've a 20% better indicated range capacity in summer than in winter, which is also borne out by my 225xe experience. I have put a similar query to my BMW dealers and will let you know what they say.

Lithium batteries have quite a large efficient temperature range, but as they approach the limits of this you cannot expect full efficiency to be maintained.

Howver, as you state the BMW App etc can only offer projections, which could differ from the the real world limit, and as with petrol tank gauges they will be slightly pessimistic to provide a safety margin. With such a low range this built-in error may assume more significance, but at least it will prompt you to recharge!

Running the battery to its discharged point is really the only way to predict maximum range under certain conditions - anything else - such as from an app - is a form of digital guesswork.

Relying on an app or whatever (I am totally ignorant about these things!) is rather like relying on the 'Miles to Empty' function of a trip computer, which also has a slight safety margin, although it is not something to be done as routine.

On an allied subject, as a well-experienced E-Driver, why not write a Running Report for Straight Six, telling us about the good and bad points of running your cars, such as servicing/repair costs and the usual bogey of charging points on a journey?
