I am very surprised not to find anything on the forum with regards to the passing of David Leake. I received a phone call from John Drake on Friday 19th October that David had sadly passed away the day before. I know David was not a great one for posting on here but I felt that he should be remembered as he was a very active club member. May be not so much lately but in the past he was a national committee member, club librarian, served on the concours committee and was South West Chairman until just recently. My wife Margaret and I became quite good friends with David and Diana attending pub meets and other events. We will miss him very much and all the members from Western Region (previously part of the South West Region) send their heartfelt condolences to Diana. Ron Parish Chairman, Western Region |

Hi Ron
My goodness - this is the first I've heard. David and I go back a long way with David having a very early 320i. I think the last time we met was at the Gaydon show when all the early E30s were there. Always a pleasant man whenever I met him. Please pass on my condolences to Diane. Mike

Ron, we spoke on the phone about it. I only met him once at Athlehampton House where I got my baptism to concours, he was a judge. We had a funny conversation about the potential for peanuts in the pull out leg rests in my car. He did find any, nice chap I am sure he will be missed.

David was one of the most pleasant people I have met, as was his predecessor, Tony Banks. Both made me feel very welcome when I first turned up at a SW Concours on my BMW motorcycle, and later when we held a joint concours with the BMW Club SW section.
Even after we moved to France, David and Diana kept in touch, and visited us a couple of times. He was one of those peole who never changed, and who will be missed by all who knew him. Sincere condolences to Diana. |

Perhaps those who knew him well could provide and article about him in the mag, that is assuming his wife and family agree. I think I have a picture with them both at Athlehampton and would be happy to forward it. I think Keith Waller and his wife are in it and Tim Maltby.

Ron.
Yes an article will appear in the December issue of the Straight Six. the Club Office tried to put it in the November issue but it had already gone to print. I am not aware of the Funeral arrangements but believe Keith Waller is coordinating this ? |

I am sure Keith will be in touch with those who knew him and and will let any other know if they are welcome to attend. This unfortunate situation does rather put things into perspective and I guess we are all guilty of not doing things because we can't find or spare the time. I hope he made the best of his life, he seemed a happy enough chap.

Although I did not know him well, I should have liked to have attended and shown solidarity and respect for a fellow member. However, this clashes with an appointment for my wife with the Oncologist, so under those circumstances I shall have to decline.
I am sure that the thoughts of all members and people who knew him and his family are with them at this very sad time. |

Thank you for posting this Ron, I was utterly shocked to read about David's passing for the first time last night in the club magazine and have now found your post here. I can't say that I knew David well, but all of my memories of him bring to mind a gentle and kind man who always seemed to put others first and who would speak to every single person at any given event. He inspected my old 316ti more than once at the River Dart concours as part of the judging panel, and wherever he was, Diana was never too far away. At any event, follow the laughter and you'd find David. I took the photograph below in June 2009 at the River Dart Country Park. For me, this image captures David in the most typical of scenarios; diligently managing a prize giving in an effortless and amusing manner. |
