Hi,

The old X3 is awful in so many ways - just check out the independent reviews.  The new model is a totally different beast - I just bought an ex-demo X3 20dSE xDrive registered Jun 12.  It came fully loaded as you'd expect of an ex demo and on the whole I think it is a fantastic car.  I have just completed my first long journey - 450 mile round trip - and found it very comfortable, quiet and easy to handle.  At a steady 70mph I got about 45mpg, thought the 'instant' mpg reader was constantly reading 48-52.

On the downside ....... the vehicle came with 19" 309s and runflat tyres, with NO SPARE.  At the top end of my journey I got a flat and was then  stranded for 3 days.  Thankfully I had taken out BMWs Tyre cover so at least the cost was (almost) covered - the limit is £250/tyre and runflats (275/40R19 101W) come in at £400. The problem .... and reason for me being stranded .... is that no-one, even the insurers preferred supplier (KwikFit) stocks tyres of this type / size, nor do the main suppliers.  I tried every tyre depot within 50 miles without joy.  In the end I had to settle for an alternative brand - going for a Goodyear instead of a matching Continental - as there was simply no alternative.  I then had to wait 3 days for the tyre to turn up, albeit one of those days was a Sunday.

Even carrying a spare is not the best solution, as front and rear tyre sizes are different.

This is the only puncture I have had in over 30 years of driving - but it is definitely worth thinking about.
