Over the past 3 months and several scans / garage visits, I have been having the dreaded TFP warning, within half a mile of starting out from home with a cold engine. The scans have all revealed the same fault code "pressure actuator EGS total current". The actuator has been replaced [twice] along with the gearbox wiring loom [which includes the thermal sensor], all the connections to the gearbox and ECU have been checked and the TFP warning still appears !
The actuator solenoid has also been moved around the other 3 positions in the box [all carried out by an auto gearbox specialist] to try to move the fault code around. When scanned it still gives the same fault / code.
The symptoms first started on a Monday morning following not being used on the Sunday, so I immediately thought it could be a battery related problem [found on other forums] from not being charged etc..
The ECU is now the main suspect [or the supply to it] as the latest pattern to emerge is that if I wake up the computer systems in the car [by opening a door etc.] every 10 hours or so the warning does not appear !!
Both myself, my independant specialist, and my auto gearbox specialist would be greatfull if anyone has any ideas?
Ps. 2001 e53 4.4i sport [auto box - obviously]
Cheers,
Ian.

Just a quick up-date.
Following purchasing BMW Car-soft software and interface for my laptop, and re-scanning, it threw up a totally different set of codes and / or faults.
It revealed that there was a Can-bus error with the Gearbox ECU, having researched all about BMW Can-bus problems and how to test them / fault find the problem has been discovered.
There was a short circuit between the Can-bus connection pins on the EGS [pins 36 and 37] removing the EGS and testing the resistance between the pins [should be between 10k ohms - 50k ohms] there was a very low resistance.
Realising a new EGS and coding were imminent I bit the bullet and removed the cover of the EGS only to find a green coroded patch on the printed circuit board [water damage] this was then thoroughly and carefully cleaned using electronic contact / circuit board cleaner and a small paint brush [be carefull to not use anything metalic or short out any components].
Everything was then re-assembled and re-scanned, showing the system was now OK
Now with fingers crossed everything seems OK, and the motto of the story being - not to trust generic vehicle scanners, but to use BMW specific equipment.
BMW Car-soft can be thoroughly recommended and if sourced sensibly can be quite economical.
ps. I am an electrical engineer and would not of attempted to carry out the repairs without prior knowledge.
Thanks for looking at this post and hope my experiences might be of help.
Cheers,
Ian.
