    Posted: 22 Jan 2010 at 12:50pm

I have to replace several speakers from original equipment Hi-fi system
because of old age/vibration etc , but if possible would like to upgrade them at the same time .

I will do all of them in one go preferably .

However , I want to keep all the original hole sizes/mounting points etc to
keep the car as original as possible .

Can anyone recommend any good speakers that fill the bill pls ??

Chris

hello there

firstly, what head unit/ source are you using ?

secondly, have you got mids and tweeters in the doors ? some of the factory cars had 3 way components in the fronts.........

Ppioneer head unit , 20w x4 output .
It's the original BMW factory Hi-fi speaker option (the one pre-dating
the Harmon Kardon one) with midrange and tweeter in front doors and
midrange and tweeters in the roof at rear .

ok, you'll have 5.25" speaker in the front kick wells as well,

so its a 3 way component set up, which there are not many of available. the rear speakers will be coaxials, 4" i belive.

no, your source is not very powerfull and could do with improving. are you willing to consider upgrading your head unit as well?

Yes that's right , kick-panel bass units too .

I'd prefer not to upgrade the head unit as I'm very pleased with it
and it has a tape deck in it too , and I still listen to tapes (yes I know
I'm ancient and they're crap sonically , but I can't afford to replace
200 tapes with cd's , and some aren't even available !!)
It also fits in with the age of the car , and I don't want to go
for something too modern , as I'm trying to keep the car as original
as possible .

What about changing the amp ? And someone over here has
mentioned 'California' speakers by Clif Design ?

ok, thats a fair point

most of what you have available on the market today will probably be an improvement on the OE factory ones

personaly i like Infinity speakers. you will struggle to find 3 way components, so it may have to be a 2 way components up front.

are the speakers powered from the head unit? or are they powered by an external amp?

I'm not sure to be honest .
I had the Hi-fi system on a previous E36 Saloon ('93) and I was under the impression that there was an amp situated under the rear seat .

However , this is a '97 Touring and I don't know about this , but the parts
diagram suggests that it does too .

What is the difference in sound between the 2-way and 3-way set-ups ??

hmmm not to sure about the amp, its not 100% confirmed. can you get a Vin check and spec confirmation from bmw?

3 ways will be mid bass, mid and tweeter

2 ways tend to be a mid and mid bass togehet with a tweeter.

any head unit can be made to power and external amp to power up any new speakers.

i'd cpould recomend a few people here in the UK to speak to and who can help you out.

these guys are local to me, and if you look at their site you'll understand why i've sudgested them.

you want a factory look and quality instal...........
