    Posted: 11 Oct 2009 at 6:56pm
I need to replace the O/S/F shock absorber on my 1997 840 Ci Sport.  When I replaced the N/S/F BMW charged me £800 for the new strut and also new hub since strut had been redesigned.  The car has M-Tech suspension (being the Sport) and I have read on various sites that it may be possible just to replace the failed shock inside the strut rather than the whole unit for another £800!

So I need to find a compatible Bilstein insert.  I have found various web-sites that claim to sell Bilstein shockers and list a "Sport" version of a shock for the 840 (all models).  But none of them ever answer the phone to find out (a) if the shock will fit and (b) if they will do sale or return, in case it doesn't...

So has anybody else already solved this problem?  If so, can you either let me know
1. the correct part number to buy, or
2. the details of a reliable UK Bilstein stockist who will answer the phone?

Bilstein do indeed do an insert. The 8 Series front strut is basically an E34 5 Series type but the normal screw collar for the insert is replaced with a staked collar. These can be cut off to reveal the threads where a screw collar can be screwed on, enabling you to replace the insert. Some E32 750i's had this set up as well, a cunning rip off ploy by BMW/Boge.

Give a member here called Davidoli (find him in the memberlist above, page 3 or the 'D's) ; to the best of my knowledge he's done an 850i.

Hi,
This may be of use or not. I have only just become a member of the Car Club, so have just seen your post. I have a 1998 840Ci sport that needs new front shocks. (By the way, replace both of yours, it's well worth it!) I have scoured the world gaining all the information, as, like you, I am not up for parting with almost 2 grand to BMW for what are, in truth, quite average shock absorbers. There is quite a bit of conflicting information out there, but AS FAR AS I CAN TELL this is the case. Having personally contacted Bilstien in Germany, they do indeed make new inserts for the E31 front strut. As I have owned old BMW's for many years, I have an account set up with Euro Car parts. On this occasion, they have been hands down the cheapest price for these Bilstien inserts. They ordered me a pair from Bilstien. I believe I ended up paying about £350 plus VAT for the pair. I have not had time to fit them yet, as I am also going to overhaul all the front suspension at the same time, and I am still scouring round for all the other parts. If you need any details, e-mail me and I will give you all the part numbers.

The car club has a special deal with Bilstein and we can deal direct and therefore get great discounts - if he is still interested let me know but ideally need to order a pair

Is bilstein still the best way to go and does the club have any buying power as I’m needing a pair.

Also I thought the shock were supposed to be electronically dampened or was that on only certain years?

Thanks
