well some of you may have spotted this at gaydon. the white touring is now sold, so it was time for a new daily driver which has now ended up being another mini project 318ti compact, with the usual options but very unique paint, bmw individual special order blue, eisblau.
1st up was detailing and more detailing and then more detailing on this compact.
started with a de greace to clean off all products on the car using a foam lance, and some TFR ( traffic film remover) also, the engine aby was re done and were the door shuts, boot shuts, and under the arches. next up was claying the car, then re wash with some bilt hammer snow foam. just before doing that, all the plastic trims were removed and so were the door mouldings and any badges. then it was time to mop the car, 1st up was using some g10 to lightly cut back the paint and remove some swirls. did a couple of passes with this, then did the car again using autoglym super resin polish. this brings back some life into the paint and helps with de swirling. after that, a glaze coat by machine again, used Chemical Guys EZ creme glaze. a quick wipe down with meguires last touch, then finshed the car off with some Autoglym HD wax, then wiped the car down again with the Megs last touch. windows clean with fast glass, trims with autoglym, tyres dressed, leather was wiped down dash cleaned and again wiped down with autoglym. engine bay was then dressed with Aerospace 303. in all i'd say a solid 16 hour detail. some pics, no arty pics, just simple ones this time round Edited by m3kos - 22 Aug 2009 at 10:29pm |

and now got plans for it........
bought a 2.8 saloon, with a later Aulisil engine and its done about 50,000 miles on that block. nice healthy engine, pulls realy well but a touch asthmatic in the higher end of the rpm rev range, but thats not surprise. well the plan is to drop it into the compact, BUT with a few extra bits done. fisrtly, m50 inlet and TB, the junk the traction control. on top of that i'll be fitting the m20 flywheel. the OE m52 one is 11kg, m20 one was just under 9kg which i've now machined down to 5.5kg i'll get custom exhuast system made, ditch the cats and map it all on 98 octane fuel. hoping it will make 225bhp and rev nice and cleanly to the redline. also toying with the idea of ARP rod bolts. alloy 'stat housing, and stewart performace water pump.
i just may ad s50 manifold aswell to go with the custom exhuast system. probably wont gain too much in extra power but it'll add a little somethign and give it better noise looks like it will be up an running in time for santa pod getting the power down will be an LSD from an e30 m3, 3.25 ratio. so it'll max out at around 135mph but it'll get there quickly. if i find its too short i have the option of 3.07 LSD so maybe if i'm lucky i'll have it all done in time for santa pod after that its going to be a suspension upgrade and brakes, for now the m tech stuff will have to do and a set of fast road pads will have to stop me |

currently having the engine swop done, it should be up and running by thursady with all the little add ons installed as well
from there, 3 things will need to be done asap 1st up will be fitting a 3.25 LSD, then a custom exhaust system. twin pipe 2.25" system with X pipes. going to try and keep it track day friendly. then it will be re map ...... still undecided who to let do it. after all that i'll be fitting some bilstein PSS coilovers, new bushes front and rear. if i can source a 2.7 lock to lock Z3 rack it would be nice, and the final step with mechanical upgrades will be a the e45 330i front disks an calipers after that , a few touches with the body work, fit a set of wheels and thats it ........ |

ok, engine swop is done
its a low milage Aulisil engine.
fitted an M20 325i flywheel which was lightend to 5.4kg. the OE dual mass one is 11kg. m20 starter motor and new e30 sachs clutch fitted.
new garkets and few other bits and peices were done as well
flay wheels....
OE m52 on the left with m20 on the right
a machined m20 flywheel to fit m52
my effort
also, the inlet manifold and throttle body from a 2.5 m50 engine were fitted as they flow and breath better than the restrictive 2.8 m52 ones
any way the 1st drive impresions, with the flywheel being so light its a wicked lively car now. the flywheel is making the box a touch chattery, but that was expected. the spin up of the enging thought the gears is great, very responsive. onme thing that needed attention was the exhuast, as was initially a hybrid of 328i and 318ti rear section. this was never going to stay on, but it was clear that the car was being strangled
so, i've kept the original 328i system up to the cats and resonators, from there ket it as 2" bore twin pipe system up to the rear box which then exits in to a single 2.5" outlel with a nice subtle exhaust tip
a decent diff has been fitted today as the small case TI diff was going to explode at some stage , so a 3.25 medium case LSD from an e30 M3. used the output flanges from the TI's diff which mate up to the TI's shafts. later down the line, i'll switch back to the lager output flanges and use some e30 M3/325i sport shafts which are larger as well
carhas been mapped as well, but no real idea yet if its made a difference as its been raining all day and the roads are are dangerous. ran a dignostics check on the car as well, and the vanos has flagged up a fault code as have the O2 sensors. i really wont get a chance to check whats up untill after santapod. tha vanos issue is that its jammed. so, it may be a case of cleaning up the vanon usnit and checking the cam timing/setting them up. oh, on final note the car was timed with a G tech timer 0-60mph ......... 6.2seconds nice and subtle

the suspension now. the coilovers were ment for a saloon so the rear shock were way to long. they also turned out to be Jamex with the blue springs, not bilsteins as i was told they were. these are fine for the job of lowering the car to get the right satance, they worlked fine on my previous car a e36 touring and the handling is pretty good, the touring had no issues with them with hard road driving and on the trip to the ring
front when on with no dramas and on the back i've used new boge gas dampers from a Z3. thinker damper than the gas ones for a compact and they'll still allow the back end to squat a bit. i was thinking about using e30 Bilsteins ( from an M3) but GSF came up trumps on the Boger dampers and give a good discount also fitted new ARB links rods, new top mounts and e30 M3 eccentric wishbone bushes and ARB mount bushes will be done next time i get the car on a ramp as well as ZM diff bush so got the allighnment done and then i fitted some new wheels sitting nose down rear arches have been rolled, and i can go lower on the front but its fairly low as it is. next up is the e46 330i brake conversion

I really like this car. Amazes me that Compacts are not more popular when you see examples like this one. Maybe it's the rarity factor that I like? Great colour too.

some routine maintenance is being done this week, namely a long overdue brake upgrade
front brakes, the original brakes were non vented stuf, ok on the road but the pads were stock and didnt like being worked too much i was going for an e46 330ci set up and huge 325mm discs but the kit i had line up is not available now. so i'm removeing all the existing brakig system and fitting 328i front calipers with vented disk. the dicks going on are brembo "max" discs and i'll be using EBC red for pads. they work from cold and up to the job of fast road use. i may upgrade to yellows depending on how i get on with these. problem with yellows is they may need a bit of heat to work and they give off a LOT of dust, not good for polished lips and a short commute to work. the Brembo MAX disc has had great reviews from people who do lots of track work in 328i's, which e36's are mildly stripped they are about the same weight as my compact. No issues like cracking and they are proven brand. i was going to go for the new EBC Ultimax disc but they are un proven, but visualy look better. so after talking it over with neil from automac i when for the brembos. rear discs are fine, but i'll be matching them with some EBC reds on the back as well. also, i'll be fitting new brake lines, with any luck braided ones if Automac can source me a set for the compact by tomorrow. all the brake fluid is being replaced by ATE superblue fluid. also, i'll be changing the oil and filter, fuel filter, plugs new ARB bushes, diff bush and front control arm bushes. i'll get the tracking done, some of this is all precaution because i have every intention of doing a track day and i want to be 100% sure its mechanincally perfect. whats works on the road, can fail on the track. so a big thanks to neil for sorting the parts out for me
i am thinking about selling the car, but if i dont the next evolution of the car will be some wheels and track day rubber, and a good track suspension set up from Gaz, and once thats done some more tuning work in the way of cams.

Kos - sounds like you will also need to do some overtime....this has the potential to get quicker and would handle well on a track day....but I suggest we fit the yelows for a trackday....and surprisingly the EBC yellows dont dust as much as other makes and work surprisingly well from cold...speak soon
Looking forward to the next evolution
