I am considering purchasing a 2005 X5 3ltr diesel sport auto on standard 19 inch wheels and wonder what fuel consumption I could reasonably expect in the real world and has anyone any info. on the realiability as I currently have a 2005 525d M sport touring and it is the worst car that I have ever owned as it has spent at least 20 days in the dealers in the last 18mnths for warranty work and it is out of warranty in June and I am afraid of the costs of keeping it.

I am surprised you have had problems with your 5 series...it is considered to be a lot more reliable than the X5 currently
I did consider an X5 recently but have opted for an E39 tourer

Around town my 2005 E53 3.0D Sport Auto averages approx 25mpg and on a motorway approx 32mpg with 40k on the clock. I have seen 37mpg on the computer on a 200 mile run back from Manchester, but only once.
I would agree that the E53 has not proved particularly reliable for me too. Almost all of the problems have been electrical and were eventually traced to a faulty starter motor drawing too much current and upsetting the computers because of the voltage drop. That was fixed just over a year ago and all has been well since. Battery starting to show signs of failure, but that's probably down to lack of use. Has to be recharged every couple of weeks or so of standing idle. I would say that in my case, the worst problems have actually been my local BMW Dealer who never actually found the fault but blamed it on all sorts of things - all of which were changed under warranty and made absolutely no difference. If the computer interrogation/diagnostic system didn't tell them what was wrong, they did not appear to be able to work it out from first principles. Took it back to the supplying dealer who had what I would call a 'real' mechanic (as against a "Technician") who found the problem at the first attempt by working from the simple end of the scale and not relying on a computer to tell him. EDIT 02/Feb/2010 - Automatic transmission failure at 42k miles. Broken plastic in the torque converter caused massive and terminal damage. £2k to fix (almost £7k if BMW had done it). Easily the most unreliable car I have ever owned. So much has been repaired/replaced under warranty. Never again!! Edited by E53Sport - 02 Feb 2010 at 6:36pm |

I have had my 3.0d for about six weeks and have never reset the Consumption 2 figure since I got it. I checked it yesterday and over 2000 miles I am averaging 30.3 mpg which is a mixture of round town and motorway driving.

I've owned my E53 3.0d for 40 days .
When I bought it , it had been used extremely sparingly for 3 mths so
I had the problem (and still do !!) mentioned above , where it sounds
like the battery is going to die when starting , so I was charging it
overnight every 3 days .
However , 2 weeks ago I had an Inspection 2 done , and the Dealer says
everything is fine , and there is no prob with either battery or alternator .
Except that there obviously is as I still have same symptoms .
Fuel consumption on my first tank included a lot of leaving the engine
running if I was doing shorter journeys , to make sure the battery didn't
die and OBC showed 26.6 mpg .
The second tank , which I refilled after the Insp. 2 is currently registering
28.8 mpg .
I havn't made a long journey yet , but will be driving over to Blighty this w/e for summer hols , so we'll see what it's like , but the previous owner
said he used to see 32-33 mpg when driving back to Scotland .

Update on mine ; It was re-mapped to 272 PS / 525 NM and now I get 28-30 MPG on the daily run stuff , and I've had 44 MPG best on a cruise controlled long journey home , but 37/40 is more realistic the way we drive it . And it goes like stink Scaring quite a few people wondering why 2.5 Tonnes goes so quickly
