Hi,

I've just had my car a week and I hit a pothole on the A500...

Can anyone recommend a good alloy wheel repairer to remove graze? Also I think my tyre may be a right off??

Thanks

Also check the inner area of the rim for circumferential cracking near the spoke roots, which is pretty common on these wheels.  In fact, on your close-up picture there is what may a fine crack between and behind the spokes, just inboard of the damaged area.  It could be some dirty water which has been centrifuged outwards, but could also be the sign of a crack - worth checking anyway.

As for the tyre - do you really need to be told that it is write-off?  Sidewall damage such as this means that the tyre - and therefore the car - is illegal to use, your insurance will be void, and your licence will collect a few points . . .  Even if a tyre specialist claims that it is only surface damage, that opinion may not be shared by a quota-hungry police officer.

A case such as this is a pretty good reason to have a spare wheel - so much for 'progress!'

Don't feel bad - potholes seem to have a magnetic attraction for wheels!  The problem is a long-standing lack of funding, in spite of huge VED and Council Tax payments, coupled with the current fashion - for that is all it is - for large wheels with very low profile tyres such as yours.  They may be OK on the billiard table-like roads of Germany, but are a recipe for expensive disaster in the UK.
