Bad news for those members with older cars who live in the Mayor's new ultra low zone from April 19. If like me you have an old E39 1999, even petrol you will be charged 24 pounds per day to drive in the zone. There are restrictions also connected with this that apply in peak hours.
He plans to expand the geographical area to all London boroughs by 2021. Already a number of car events have been abandoned, the large gathering at Alexandra Palace for example. Fortunately, I no longer live in N17 (Tottenham), but I am very sorry for those people who need their car to get themselves to work, children to school and elderly and cannot afford a newer car. It is estimated 1.5 million cars will be affected by 2021 in London area. Get yourself a trailer or move out, you car is becoming redundant. |

The political classes blithely tell people to buy a new electric or low-emission car, but forget that many people (most of whom voted for them!) simply cannot afford to do so. Even if they scrape up enough to buy a well-used car of the approved type, the running costs of an electric car are still really unknown, except that they will be expensive. Just read the posts on the i3 from our resident electric car fan, then shudder at the complexity and its associated replacement costs . . . I'm glad my old cars will outlast me!

This is a typical example of bureaucratic mismanagement, the fact is more and more people are coming to London to live, for whatever reason. Every extra person creates their own pollution and those low skilled workers are the ones which probably start work in the early hours in the city which never sleeps in the UK.
If someone is on minimum wages and starts work at 6am at Heathrow in a flight food preparation job for example, they will probably need to use their old banger to get to work, in some cases, not all. Where are they getting the funds for an eco friendly electric car? nearly 40 years ago when I lived in inner London and was a younger man it was not safe to travel on public transport late at night. We have had a man stabbed to death in front of his 14 year old son on a train to London in broad day light, ( last week) not surprising some people only wish to use their car? It is an example of politicians taking the easy option - to penalise the motorist - rather than tackle the biggest offenders. Unfortunately, this means are those who burn oil or gas for domestic heating, and also eco-warriors using wood burners, but I cannot imagine a politician at any level forbidding such practices!

Not quite right Norman, if your car is non compliant the ULEZ charge is £12.50. You will only pay £24 if you go into the current congestion zone as well.

Here is a scenario, person A has a car which is no longer compliant, however they used to take it for service to a dealer who was inside the congestion zone. This dealer was no a massive BMW dealer but a small company who did mostly older cars and a lower labour rates. Would you as a customer pay the 24 pounds to go to your usual car garage or look for another?
This is where the whole process has not been thought through, just an example. |

Happy day the ULEZ stealth tax starts today and will cover ALL of London on 25th Oct 2021. So if you dont comply its 24 pounds per day, you might want to sell your car?

For me (obviously an outlier case), driving down to London from Liverpool and paying the congestion/diseasel charge for the 3 days I'm there is still cheaper (£120 vs £325+taxi), faster (3h vs 4h), more comfortable (my car, my music, my pace, my temperature, etc.), easier (no car/train/tube/bus changes) than getting an open return train ticket on Virgin and having to use the train/tube/bus to complete my journey.
If I was claiming expenses, and still worked near Kings Cross, then I'd happily get the train, as I could leave home by 6am and, with just a stroll from Euston, get into the office by 9am. I'm in Brentford now, and it's my own money. Luckily I've got a few more years before the zone extends that far - and I'll probably have another car by then...unless Sadiq wants to offer to swap a nice new Tesla/i3/Leaf for my Alfa 147? Not affected this until the ULEZ hits the North Circular in October 2021 then will need to either pay the £12.50 charge or change the 335d.

Andrew E, London is marmite. I worked and drove to Blackfriars for years, because it was where I was employed. I lived in Tottenham in 1980s but moved out when I felt it became unsafe.
But you are correct overseas vehicles, ones not registered in UK, false plates, incorrect digits, no plates, and finally cloned plates. Big brother stealth cameras, but Manchester are supposed to join it and so on as so forth. |
