It occurred to me that many people may not be getting the best rate possible based on circumstances not being taken into account? What am I on about, well for example I like many continue my insurance from year to year, hopefully getting a higher no claims discount, I got the car garaged, a tracker fitted, a limited number of miles declared.

However, mine is tucked away for 3-4 months, it is not SORN and needs to be protected against fire, theft accidental damage like garage roof blown off in a storm or something. But it is not being driven, so no risk of an accident on the road for that period. OK I hear you say reduce the mileage per year, I have done. But if I decided I wanted to go to Europe and do 3-4,000 extra miles I then have to go back and tell the insurer who wants a premium.

Perhaps the way I do it is in fact the only way, but it seems my risk for those 3-4 months is low and it represents 25% of the premium?

Hi Norman,

If it is a leisure vehicle (low mileage, social use only etc) then laid up cover could be an option - there are terms to meet for this to be an option :)

As for renewing yearly, we advise people they can look around - it's on page 2 of our invite letters. However, we also advise people to call us as details being updated can effect premium. You'd be surprised at the amount of people who say it's the same as last year and then when you go through details have got married/divorced, changed occupation and the vehicle value needs to be amended.

Which is why we like to speak to our clients to make sure we really are giving them the best porice we can offer for the correct details. Remember to call us when it comes round for renewal :)

Carlie

I was not actually referring specifically to myself, it was a fairly general comment. I am 100% risk adverse and as such insure both my vehicles in-conjunction with my business, whilst I do not do ten of thousands of business miles there may be an occasion, for example I take a car to a show and then have a business meeting the next day somewhere close, it is not worth returning home to go back to almost the same location the next day.

It is a pity that there is not a system whereby one can be insured against all risks except collision accident if the car is not being used. May the fitting of a device that shows when the car is in use might work, however not the kind that people have that monitors their driving.

The way legislation is going in a few years most of the cars in the club will be banned from certain parts of the UK or attract a crazy penalty for using it. Not car shows in certain London Boroughs already.

It's an interesting thought - I suppose with the Laid Up cover option there is a system in place for vehicles not in use (Accidental Damage, Fire and Theft Cover only - no road risk/third party damages) but there are terms to be met in order to get this cover.

Hopefully legislation doesn't get too crazy Norman :) Hope you had a nice Christmas - Looking forward to the events in the New Year!

Yes thanks looking forward to attending events whilst we still can and dont have to take them on a trailer. How would insurance work for that, if one has a car which is not taxed, no MOT and only taken on a trailer to a show and not driven on the public road? However, I have noticed a number of shows say the vehicle must be insured?

I have seen an example whereby a person claimed a car was not a car as they were not driving it as it did not work and they were using it for storage only, however they were on the public highway and had affixed a notice saying " this is no longer a car it is a car shell for storage only". Not too sure what the outcome was.

It's laid-up cover they're after there, as the car in question is not being driven on the Public Road - but trailered instead :)
Worth mentioning though that a lot of people keep these cars MOT'd to show as road worthy to help with values if hit and written off.

I used to have my E36 M3 on a laid up policy with Classic Line on an agreed valuation, i kept it Mot,d every year for my records as i had all previous Mot certificates, invoices and tax discs..I.m not sure if it would have affected the valuation if i would have needed to make a claim..?. The new owner was over the moon when he purchased it off me, so for a bit of effort every 12 months it paid off for me and the new owner..Smile

Dave, this is exactly what I am talking about. Was it laid up for all of the year or just periods of it?

Laid up for full year, but i still had it mot,d. Not sure if it did,nt have an up to date MOT if it could have affected any claim or the agreed valuation.. Something i never asked... But now i think anyone with an agreed valuation on a laid up policy should be asking that question for sure. As everyone knows all insurance companies will not pay out if they can find the smallest reason not to...Plus keeping up to date with your Mot is a good way of knowing if anything is deteriating..

Dave, thanks I understand what you say and agree. However, I am wondering if it is possible to have a part laid up policy for say 4 or 5 months of the year.

In terms of MOT I have found that one needs to be careful where you take the car. Two years ago I took a car to BMW main dealer, car passed but had advisory over springs etc. 6 months later took the car for a full check on video at same dealer no problems found. Decided the BMW tester was over zealous, took it now twice to another tester passed no observations.

Hello,

Sorry I was off for a few days!

Laid up cover varies with insurers - but we have policies where it can be done for part of the year.
In terms of Agreed Value and MOT's you'd need to ask your insurers really as some vehicles are MOT exempt so it's too broad of a subject to give a definite answer without looking at specific policies.

Thanks

Carlie

Carlie - in simple terms, if a vehicle had a MOT and was re tested every year and not not failed at the time of the policy commencement, the car did not have an agreed value, but the owner said for example I will not drive the car from 1 Oct to 1 April is there such an offer which includes comprehensive cover for the remaining 6 months?

Do you mean fully comp when on the road but not when laid up Norrie ? Or just fully comp when on the road... Plus from my experience its always best to have an agreed valuation certificate with your ins company, in the event of a claim for the cost of getting an agreed valuation its worth its weight in GOLD..

Dave, I mean fully comp when on the road and adequately insured against all risks when garaged, off the road for a significant period of time.

The potential for an agreed value for my B7 is a difficult one, for a number of reasons. There are indeed only 7 remaining right hand drive E65 ALPINA B7. There were on 11 ever made. None of the remaining 7 are identical in every respect. The one I own I believe had the maximum amount of extras that were available at the time, pushing the original price to 93,750 pounds.

There are none of the original 7 cars currently for sale and the only other B7 which is RHD is a Japanese imported car which was recently advertised IRO 50,000 pounds. I have personally inspected the car at an approved BMW dealership and whilst the Km reading is fairly low, the specification and interior is far inferior in my view to the one I am lucky to have acquired in 2012.

If any insurer wishes to match the only similar, in loose terms, one in the market the I would accept 50K no problem.

I have given the current insurer my estimate ( which I am not revealing on here) of the value. Also in taking into account the value, my has full BMW service history from new, has still fully comprehensive BMW assured warranty, has a VHS and GPS tracker life time fitted and is garaged when not in use. It has been a winner in it's class in concours when entered last year. Now what value do you place on that?

I,m sure you could get a policy which would be fully comp on the road for set dates and still be fully comp on the laid up agreed dates when garaged.. I used to use the club for my Agreed valuation which at the time were handled by Steve Haslam.. Before Steve, Jeff Heywood did mine and i never had a problem, i have always stayed with Classic Line for many years and found them most competitive on price and service..

Well, low and behold, the Japanese car which Khan motors have had for 3 years with no buyer is now down to 20K. I think perhaps I should get an agreed some based on the lack of knowledge of the insurer or their assessor. Indeed quite worrying that a person in the club works as an assessor and when I questioned them about assessors knowledge about specific cars, its seems they have general knowledge but not specific knowledge and could be doing a Nissan in the morning and a Merc in that afternoon.

Hello Again!

I'm not 100% sure I get the question asked but hopefully this covers the points being raised...

Laid up cover - Accidental Damage, Fire and Theft (No 3rd Party Cover as it's not on the road to cause 3rd Party Damage)
This can then be changed to Full Road Risk on Fully Comp insurance when you plan to get it back on the road. This can be done mid-term.

If you wish to discuss how this works with your policy or if it is an option please call in as it appears I'm not getting notifications of replies :( also, as mentioned above where there are requirements to be met I can't go into full detail of a policy publicly.

Thanks
Carlie
