I should not have been surprised, but I was - to see that the creeping paralysis of lowered speed limits infected Belgium during 2016. Basically, the area of Wallonia, which runs from Lille in the west to Aix-la-Chapelle in the east, and down to the French border, retains its 90 kph speed limit on normal roads, as does the greater Brussels area. However, the Flanders area, which encloses the norther third of the country, has now reduced the general speed limit to 70 kph (43 mph) in the name of road safety and environmental protection, making it a good area to avoid! This is rather like Yorkshire unilaterally making its own speed limit - one would have imagined that by now the EU would have standardised such matters - so much for the Little Englander claim that EU member states cannot make their own laws . . . Incidentally, drivers can now be fined for exceeding the speed limit by even ONE kph - but at least the fine is very small, and does not attract any licence points. About the only people who welcomed this must have been fanatical groups such as 'Brake' who are probably lobbying to have a 40 mph declared over all of the UK - but it is often difficult to even drive at 40 mph! |
