Not that easy on a forum but spin in manually if it free wheels with no tension at all its suspect then try it with it running and roll up some newspaper and try and stop the fan spinning if stops straight away that's not a sign of a good one - used ones for the early car are rare now and can't seem to get aftermarket I tried for a customer a few weeks back so had to buy from the dealer - not cheap

Hi Cabrio

tried to turn the fan and it does move
tried it with the engine running and paper it does stop from going round.
so those it want a new metal bit on the fan or is it more than that..

Hi Brian
I don't have an E30 but I just recently changed my viscous fan coupling on my E46 due to it being worn.
I had mine diagnosed by 2 garages for peace of mind as my engine seemed a bit rattley from the front end.
When I grabbed my fan by hand without the engine running & wiggled it their was slight play within the viscous coupling & the fan itself & there was also signs of wetness on the coupling fins. I also replaced the water pump just as a precautionary measure at the same time.
I purchased mine new from a bmw parts specialist on eBay & found their advice & service very good. Purchase price for both was about £90.

Hope this helps

Regards
Rich

If you have never changed it and you plan to keep the car it won't hurt to replace the viscous yes the round metal part with left hand thread 32mm big spanner and go from there

Hi All

RE: FAN.

The guy across the road , who is an AA machanic.. he tell me the fan should stop when you place a newspaper on it. These cars are one of the few that do that.

also can anyone tell me the colour antifreeze i should use...

thanks all
Hutch

Hi hutch

Upon a quick scan on PH's forum, some folk are saying the pink coolant is long life or 5 years & the blue/green is 2 years. I am not sure what the differences are myself as I always get my local garage to do mine.

The other thing to check regarding the cars running temperature, if not already done is temperature sensor or thermostat as these may possibly be faulty.

Sorry but I'm not a qualified mechanic but I hope my posts are of some help Brian to getting things sorted.

Rich

Hi hutch

at the £325 from BMW that's more than I got quoted for my E46 if I recall that's as far as I went with that one.
I got my viscous coupling from motormec 01603 485163 very helpful & quick service. As I mentioned in one of my previous posts I also changed the water pump as a precautionary measure. I got viscous coupling & pump for less than £90, I didn't need to change the fan itself as they very rarely wear. What I also found very helpful that they also use Realtek to match up the part numbers to your cars chassis.

Don't forget this is an early car so viscous does differ but later one would fit and factors struggle to supply

Admin, do you not think that this thread should have been moved in May of 2016 to somewhere more focused on E30's ?

Brian, glad you got it sorted.
