Has anyone purchased and retro fitted a hardtop to a 1998 1.9 16v Z3?
I have wanted one since I bought the car in 1999. I originally planned a new one, but as the car is now a summer use car, it seems a bit excessive. I have been looking for a second hand one, but with no luck. I have read stories of people purchasing second hand and lots of the mounting and wiring is missing.
Any advise would be appreciate, either buying or potential suppliers...
Michael.

Hi - what were you looking for original or Wiesmann!

Also what colour is your car as will save painting

Any thoughts on interior colour and trim - eg velour or leather

You will have issues with fitting kits as the dealer kit is approx £250 from the dealer and then you have to pay to fit - if your car does not have an electric roof fitting will be lot harder

Also need to factor in fitting cost unless fancy doing yourself - approx 3 hours work for non electric

Most important thing is your budget - once I know what you want here I can point you towards a seller depending on your location to make fitment, collection or delivery easier

Hi - Thanks for the reply Cabrio, I did not know there where different types ideally original as I hope to keep the car original, but If I knew the difference I might consider a Wiesmann!
My car is Red like the Z3 featured in the club magazine regularly in France, the car is a 1998 1.9 16v model, I think its Hellrott Red.
Interior colour and trim is beige leather, if the trim has to match if possible.
There is no fitting Kit on the car, however I am good at DIY and from a maintenance electrical engineering back ground, so will attempt the job myself. The car does not have an electric roof. Does this mean there is a wiring harness missing? as you mentioned the fitting will be lot harder,
approx 3 hours work for non electric roof ? it a second car and if it gets too much I can close the garage and walk away for a while!
I am located in the north east, Newcastle / Gateshead area. Any price considered, however Ideally under £500 for a second hand hardtop. you will have to forgive my ignorance if this price is unrealistic. I did once see a second hand one some time ago - boxed as new with fitting kit for £750, it was sold when I  rang up. It was blue anyway...
Thanks for your help, Michael...

Will be difficult in your budget - you wont be able to afford a Wiesmann roof...you may be able to find a scratched one but then you will need to buy a fit kit and get it painted - which is likely to cost circa £500 - if you manage to do all that I can offer you advice on fitting...but any roofs I know for sale currently are c£1000

looks like I will need to plan for £1000.00 ! or so, maybe later in the year / early next year. The dealers still quote £1700.00 so that cheaper then their option. will the £1k option be complete i.e. fitting kits, VAT, etc.?
You have put my mind at rest, My concern when I first enquired was the availability of hard tops or potentially never getting one. From your reply I get the impression some are out there? If this is the norm? I don't mind hanging on a while until I can afford a good one.  Thanks again for your advise...
