Came back from a wee trip abroad and started up the 123d to discover no full beam, no indicators, no dash lights, no fog lights, window drop/close not working correctly. Fortunately there seemed to be some kind of fail-safe and the headlights, rear lights and brake lights were working correctly so I could drive home and then to the dealer. Apparently all this was caused by a defunct Footwell Lighting Module.
2 wee things I discovered while getting this fixed under warranty : The E82 fuse box is not as accessible as my old E36 one - buried as it is behind the glovebox. The part, as it was replaced under warranty, is only warrantied until the end of the car warranty rather than the 2 years it would have been warrantied for had I paid for its replacement myself which I found both surprising and very disappointing. |

It is even more disappointing that a failure of the footwell lighting module should cause such mayhem! BMW now seem to prefer complexity to reliability . . .
How much would a new module etc have cost if outside warranty? |

When I checked the fuses, there were 3 assigned to the lights and 4 to the windows! So complex is definitely correct. The diagrams I looked at suggested up to 5 modules/black boxes scattered through the car. As Pittsy implies, complexity is pretty much a given in these cars now with the sheer number of inter-related systems and features. I didn't get any idea of cost from the dealer but it looks like the module itself is in the ~£150 range and I would guess 2-3hrs of dealer labour so something in the £400 neck of the woods all in if not warrantied. |

The trick is to offer a "contribution" to the cost of the part. People in the past have given as little as £5 for the 2 year warranty and its been accepted.
You've missed a trick there bud
