Well, I've decided that the Punto will go and a 116d is to replace it. Thanks to Fiat's aggresive marketing the car has lost a great deal in less than 2 years.   I just hope the BMW doesn't follow suit.

Anyway having looked at the tech spec of the 1 series the diesel engines up to the 120 are all 2 litre but different BHP. Is it just a mapping issue or are there physical changes , for example to the manifolds, cams etc?

I see there was a thread earlier about remapping but with no real conclusion as to if the 1 series can be remapped. Has anyone now had first hand experience of them, now they are approaching 5 years old.

cheers

Mike go for the 118 if you want to maintain economy and be green etc. can remap them all but the 120 is quick anyway - let me know if you buy one...problem with them is that to buy they are not cheap though

The engine codes are the same so often the map on the ECU is the difference but there tend to be other differences that will restrict performance....I can ask a BMW Master Tech as I would have thought there may be more to it....I will look into this for you as I want to get a 118d for a family member when I get their Mini Cooper sold

Cabrio

Thanks to the lack of value in a 20 month T jet I am looking at the 116d and have had one on loan for the day.
I did try a 118d last weekend and tbh couldn't tell much difference really. So for the little mileage it is likely to do (the Punto has only done 5800 in 20mths!) a 116d will suffice, for now

I'll let you know when I sign on the dotted line and we'll discuss a remap.

The latest 116d is a 2 litre and it's £35 a year road tax. All the 4 cylinder 1 Series have been upgraded to 2 litre now, with the 2 litre 116i replacing the fartless old 1.6 model. It's a much better car now.

You have PM Mike.

As you may see by my signature I have signed up for a 116d Sport with the only additions as cruise, bluetooth and a towbar.
I do like the familiar feel of the sports seats, very much like the E30. It also has the multi funtion steering wheel.
Oh and yes it is only £35 road tax  So take that Mr Brown......

Delivery is due late December to beat the VAT increase

I have tried to sell the Punto privately well below any forecourt price but not one piece of interest. Thank god for part ex..

What colour is it - there was only one choice - red of course.
