The battery fitted to my 2009 123d from new is a Varta battery and 3 years on it is beginning to show signs of wear.

According to Varta the following batteries are suitable:

Varta Blue F17 580-406-074 @ £84 including Vat and delivery
Varta Silver F18 585-200-080 @ £87 inclusive
Varta AGM F21 580-901-080 @ £165 inclusive.

The AGM is for vehicles fitted with stop/start facility that I do not have.

Would anyone know why my local BMW dealer has quoted £324?  What am I missing here?Confused

Cheers
Graham

ATS advised me a couple of weeks ago that they cannot change batteries on some modern cars as they cannot reset certain error codes and lights that come on after the switch (thankfully mine was a 2000 E38 so no issues). It would be worth checking with a fitting company or a BMW independent to make sure it can be done without dealer intervention.

Thanks Paul,

I will check with a local independent and maybe a Bosch centre.

The dealer had already charged me £52 for an opinion that the battery might be running out.  For a firm diagnosis they quoted me £300.  If it turned out to definitely be the battery that was a further £324.

Modern cars might drain power but there is nothing like a BMW dealer for draining money; it really is quite scandalous!

If you want 'Progress' then it will cost you!  It is, of course, in your best interests . . . according to the manufacturer.

Modern BMWs are fitted with a battery monitor system, which looks at the amounts of charging and discharging (ampere-hours in and out of it) and voltage in all conditions) so it can warn you of impending electrical doom.

This means that when a new fully-charged battery is fitted, the battery monitoring system must be reset, which is another excuse to drain your wallet, unless you are a member of  the perceived customer base - a business user who simply sets any expenditure against his tax, or has a  leasing company to pay for everything.

I think that as manufacturers such as BMW, Mercedes, VW and Audi cannot get a European law passed to restrict all servicing to their dealers they are simply making it impossible for non-dealers to do anything - did you read the article about the current type of water pumps in this month's Straight Six?

We only have an international open standard for automotive electronics by virtue of the Americans, who threatened Anti-Trust proceedings  against the large manufacturers unless they co-operated, so giving us the OBD standard interface, rather than a different interface protocol by each manufacturer.  Since then they have been trying to get around it in various ways, and this is a very lucrative way to sell over-priced batteries.

I'm glad that my fourteen-year old Z3 will last for the rest of my driving life!

I recall having problems a few years back with a battery on my E30. It was a BMW battery and still under warrenty, I didn't use the car much and the battery wasn't holding charge.
you could charge it up and it would start the car, 2 days later it wouldn't.
My dealer said it may be a problem with the car but I informed them that I had swapped the battery with my other e30 and the fault had moved with the battery.
They told me to leave the battery with them for a couple of days for testing.
After 3 days they called to say the battery was fine and I owed them just over £100 for the testing! the battery cost less than that!
we agreed on a much lower price after a discussion around what is fair, what's not and reasons to stay with the brand..

You need to keep away from main dealers when ever poss, they only want to empty your bank account. Try to find a good independent, around my area most are ex BMW trained anyway. Wink

You are definitely not alone in this thinking.

Whilst this may seem slightly emotive, this battery issue has almost certainly been the final straw for me. I have been a customer of my local dealer for 20years and this is part of the problem.  Because of the good relationship I have with so many individuals there I am reluctant to complain.  The less I complain the more they abuse my loyalty and the many times I have complained it just makes it slightly more uncomfortable the next time I go there; I think I have just about had enough.  A good friend of mine sums up the feeling he has when he goes there and genuinely feels physically sick when he collects his car because however ridiculous he thinks the bill will be, it will be more.

I shall keep my 850 because I have had it for so long and use it very seldom but as much as I love BMW's the never ending poor dealer experience is going to drive me away from the marque for my daily driver.Unhappy

Cheers
Graham

I've had trouble with my battery in my E91 08 plate. I purchashed the car 6 months ago (Oct 12) from BMW Coopers Croyden. The stop start function rarely worked, then just over 3 months later the battery warning light came on. Coopers of Tunbridge Wells looked at the car and recharged the Battery over night. A few days later the warning light came back on. Coopers Tunbridge Wells had the car back in a few times, the battery was tested etc. Outcome the battery was NOT faulty so no claim could be made under warranty but it was decided that the Battery was on its way out and that it could have been when I purchased the car. After many phone calls etc both Cooper Croyden and Cooper Tunbridge Wells decided I may have a case so between them as a good will gesture they paid and fitted a new Battery (£325 ish) FREE of charge. They also didn't charge me for testing / charging the battery. Tunbridge Wells Service Dept have always been very fair and honest, I've been going there for 10 years or so, cant fault them.
