I think that you will find that the Club is looking at alternatives and hoping to make it a full 2 day event. However, it has to be better than Gaydon otherwise makes no sense to move. It could well be that with proper planning Gaydon could be extended to a full weekend and many more activities.

However, if anyone has any suggestions for another venue to meet the criteria then I am sure the club would be interested.

Gaydon has had it's day, if the club want to keep members they need to cater for wives and girlfriends, there is nothing for them at Gaydon.
Also it would be nice if the meeting moved south for a change.
As the club HQ is now so far away, visiting new venues will be a bit of a challenge.

Gaydon. so is it the geographical location or the same old format? I live in West Sussex towards the Gatwick side. There has been nothing here since I joined. I do enjoy the club, but have done more than 5000 miles in the last 12 months travelling to events.

However, I would encourage anyone to come up with a viable alternative.

The furthest east is Maidstone I think for you, still a fair trek from Ramsgate.

Yes I believe some regional boundaries might change or have, sorry I don't know the detail. Officially I was put in the SE region, but I am with the Wessex and will remain so. The boundaries are a nonsense really, for example the SE region has a pub meet on 18 miles from the Wessex one??

Just go to anything you want at any region I am sure you will be welcomed.

My house to Gaydon and back is 672 miles, potentially 3 tanks of petrol for me. It would be nice to hold the event in Edinburgh one year but lets face it, that wont happen.

But is that as stupid as it sounds with the new "Gaydon" as a two day event greater distances might be more acceptable . Just a thought

Edinburgh Festival, BMW Car Club weekend and a 700 mile round trip appeals to me

The Edinburgh comment was tongue in cheek. Unfortunately most of the major car events happen in The South. Yes, the south of Britain, not just England. The NEC for example, is south for the majority of the UK landmass.

I had to laugh at Chris Evans' Carfest North and Carfest South. Its Carfest South and Souther. Anyway, any large expanse of grass or hard standing parking area would be fine for the annual event, Gaydon in itself isn't that great a location. The museum is OK but its just OK, nothing special.

Personally, I think that moving the event around the country is a great idea, I would even consider re-attending but its just not worth the £260 or so in fuel to go to the same old place.

Good luck BMWcc

The nearest the national event got to the "north" in the [ast was back in the 90s when the national concours went to Harewood House near Leeds.

Whilst I do agree with Campbell on varying it, when there is a good venue then stay with it a few years, perhaps.

Gaydon has its attractions for those new to the club but after a few years it does become the same old.

I had the same problem with the closest pub meet being Dorking however after speaking to the chair person it was sugested that i start up a pub meet in my local area. Which is the Maidstone pub meet and has been successfull for the past 7 years. So why not start one up in your area all you need is a nice friendly pub with a good size carpark. Then just advertise it on the forum and hopefully some members will come along. I can also put it in the club magazine for you if you send me the details.

While is the USA last month I went along to a ‘Legends of the Autobahn’ meeting.  This was made up of cars from the BMW car Club of America and the equivalents for Porsche, Mercedes-Benz and Audi. It made for a much more interesting meeting than just BMWs and attracted a lot more vendors and associated stalls. Each club vied with each other to put on a good display and while the concours events were separate, it was nice to see 70’s BMWs next to 70s Porches, etc.

If there is a rethinking of Gaydon going on then there should be consideration of a Legends of the Autobahn type event.

There are already a number of shows such as this in the UK. I am uncertain how they compare in size to the USA meet. A number of us went to the German show at Beaulieu this year. There is also the Players show at North Weald www.players-show.com.

The suggestion posted above is a good one, perhaps the car club, who I understand is meeting with or has met with the clubs of those other marques may consider pulling together. I guess one potential issue might be if the other clubs over shadowed BMW?

However a venue like Silverstone, could include a track day and vast amount of space if for BMW national event. It has many fixed facilities and I am sure that for example the club could hire the Silverstone Racing Club facility, which has a bar, catering facilities and own grandstand, they add a big marquee to it for F1, so no reason they could not for a requirement which exceeds the numbers permitted in the club. Opposite there is a concreted area where I am sure the car club could display 2-300 cars or if not this could be given to vendors as it is at large meets.

Silverstone has young persons driving experience and the 4 x 4 experience, there could also be track passenger experience in the Silverstone track cars, Lotus, Aston etc.

This is just a suggestion, I am sure there are many others, would be glad to hear them.

This simple fact is there has to be something going on, more than just a lot of very nice static cars.
