My 1984 E30 odometer has stopped working. The gears were broken and I have replaced them. They can now  be moved manually to advance or reduce the reading. Both the trip-meter and the total mileage wheels move using this method but the meter doesn't work when replaced into the car and driven. The speedometer works so I'm thinking that motor that drives the number wheels is not working. There is a printed circuit board in the back of the unit which might control the step motor but I don't know how it
works. Can anyone shed any light on this or know of anyone reliable to repair it.

Thanks for your reply.
I have had 2 problems which are now solved. The first was that the cogs had crumbled which were replaced. The second was that the speedo unit plugs into the dash unit.  The connecting pins had a film of corrosion on them I'm guessing, as plugging and un-plugging a few times cleaned the contacts and the speedo now works.
