Hello,
Paid £320 for my E36 bmw last year: no change in my details but the quote has doubled: cheapest online quote is £550? Why?
Does anyone have this experience?

Thanks.

can be various reasons I guess

- postcode
- vehicle risk - eg softop, power of car

Also be interested to see the impact of recent EU ruling on sex discrimination - guess all insurance may go up to allow for young boys insurance and people with no insurance poss increasing as cant afford

I was told that car ins has gone up 40% in the last year for most circumstances, first time drivers under 24 are paying on average 58% more than a year ago!

Think about what you can do for the club, not what it can do for you...

also a reason for high increase is false claims and weather floods in past they have to make there money somewhere so increase our premiums

Think u r right.  Insurance seems such a racket.  I was disappointed recently to 'trawl' all of the Straight Six advertisers to find they quoted between £100 to £300 more than I could find elsewhere - and these ara supposed to be specialists with car club discount!  Shop around and shop around again.  Eventually kept mine below £300 fro new small soft-top.

Try speaking to Clare Ironside at A plan Thatcham, she does special quotes for BMWCC members. Mine went down 300 pounds switching via them and also saved 95 pounds on home insurance. They will find a policy for you and its a personal service, not a call centre person. Indeed Aviva don't even have my car listed for example.

Adrian flux has come up trumps for the last 2 years for my e46 m3. 5000 miles limit all for £446

they where the last on my list, I only tried them for a laugh. seemed daft not to go with them, classicline was only a couple of quid dearer but are always worth a call

My desire is to own the best car I can with the lowest insurance which is why I got the best deal from A Plan Thatcham and deal on a one to one basis with Clare Ironside. She matches your personal circumstances with the Insurers to get the best price. The cover any BMW anywhere in UK.

It worked well for me. No limit on mileage, full European cover, fully comp, low excess, loan car guaranteed and was 400 cheaper than any other quote.

may not work for everyone, but I am happy.

They are an they support the car club, they had 4 people at Silverstone helping with the Car Marshaling. You don't get help like that from Aviva or the other people.

I just say to people get them a ring, if it is good great, but if you don't ask you will never know.

Just one example, I was with Direct Line, first they told me they did not recognised an Alpina B7, then they said it was a 750i. When we got over that they said I needed a tracker fitted, it already had one but they did not know that. Then they asked me to prove it, send docs they lost them, then they wanted 899 pounds for same insurance with higher excess than I got from Groupama Insurance via "A Plan". Clare said to me " If you say you have a tracker that's all the proof I need" Therefore you can stick those companies with a call centre, press this, press that, no expertise and the "computer says no"

There may well be equal or better brokers, I have not tried them all.

I found Classicline hard to beat for the last two years (Claire has tried!), on my last renewal the underwriters removed the need to restrict the mileage AND the cost came down. I have 3 cars insured with them on a multicar policy (all "classics" - Z4MC, E30 M3, Domino Pimlico).

Think about what you can do for the club, not what it can do for you...

Darren, please do not misunderstand me, I am not saying it is a guarantee. It depends on personal circumstances as you quite correctly indicate. However, you tried and therefore know that unfortunately she could help on this occasion.

My son used to work for Gallagher formerly Heath Lambert Insurance brokers, who are a massive global organisation. There are many factors that can lower your premiums including occupation, Doctor, Solicitor, Dentist, Police Officer, Pilot, Director for example can reduce a premium.

Self employed, driver, courier, publican, builders, factory or shop worker, IT or Computer work can raise it. So I understand, so for example IT Manager might be changed to Business team manager and price might reduce.

Norman, absolutely, it can seem quite strange sometimes when talking to people about what they pay for their insurance as what sound (on the surface) like similar risks can vary massively, however, there is usually a detail or two that to us "civilians" seem innocuous make a big difference to insurers...like postcodes and occupation for example!

Think about what you can do for the club, not what it can do for you...

I know, mine dropped when I said Managing Director as opposed to self employed (even though I own the business). The rationale for this was "self employed" includes plumbers, builders, road workers, carpenters etc. This is a risk as no guarantee of income, where as MD seems to be well paid.

This could of course not be correct as anyone can register a company and call themselves MD. Its about perception of character is it not by the insurer.

Hi Ian, is that as a second car ?

hi alex, yes its a 2nd/3rd car
had just over 3 years, done around 12000 miles in it and thrashed it at every opportunity

earlier this year when renewing the policy with flux, I asked them for a quote on my more recent project (car 4 ) a e46 325ti. being a totally standard car, me with a full compliment of NCB and just covered a 343bhp m3 with them......they wanted over £500

apparently, it was because I was a unknown quantity with that particular car and deemed as more of a risk

i'm sure they make it up as they go along sometimes

I get my insurance via M&S Bank. I have recently swapped motors and when I rang then to change the cost on the existing policy went from £400pa to £1100pa!

But then they did a search for another policy and found one with the same insurer which was almost identical [slight increase in excess] and was only £350pa!!!

So I've gone from a 19 year old 2 door coupe to a 9 year old soft-top sports car and it's cheaper - how does that work?

Its a lottery...the industry needs investigating by the fraud squad/office of fair trading...I swear they just make up the prices as they go along. Have Panorama done a programme on the insurance industry recently ?

I can give an insight into how some of it works. Basically each insurer will have a fund pot. This is a moving amount of money that they are holding, increased by new subscriptions, decreased by claims. When you call an Insurer with a call centre, the person who answers the call has this ever changing information on their screen. Therefore you can call on a Monday at get one price and the next day and get another.

When we have ice, snow more claims are made and this alters the cash flow, the computer automatically recalculates so the Insurer suffers no loss, and further add risk compensation price to protect its self.

It is possible to avoid this, by a getting a guaranteed value for you car, can be done by BMWCCGB in some cases and also a broker who will quote on that fixed price. In my case I used "A" Plan and Clare gave me a good deal.

You can imagine how quickly the rates change for big insurers with 35 million cars on the road in UK.
