Hi,
I've recently purchased a 2016 M3. It has just under 20k miles on the clock. Whilst braking from 40mph down I've noticed a grinding noise coming from the front wheels. The brake pad wear indicator shows plenty of life in the pads yet, so don't want to needlessly change them, however the noise is annoying. I've read in some forums that the original pad compound may be very hard therefore creating the noise, however I would have thought BMW would have considered this. Wondering if anyone else has had this issue or has an idea of how it can be resolved. Thanks |

Have you looked at the pads and discs ? the sensor might be faulty or you could have a small stone jammed inbetween the disc and pads, a mate of mine recently had this on his scooby and when he stripped it down it was a stone that would not grind down even on heavy braking, hope this helps .

Thanks Dave, I think I'll have to have a closer look at them. BMW seems to think the pads should have 70k in them but that sounds overly optimistic.

If you do not find any grit etc trapped in the pads, look hard at the useage you car gets. So many performance cars with pads designed for hard use get hacked around town, or join the usual procession on a motorway, with associated gentle braking. If this is your driving pattern, try some progressivly harder and longer braking to get the pads really hot - this transfers a microscopic layer of friction material to coat the disc surface, often stopping noise and improving brake response.

Evening, so had a closer look at discs and couldn't see any sign of scoring so went out for a good spin and tried the heavy braking routine. Worked a treat and the grinding has gone plus the drive felt amazing, acceleration is great! Been so long since I've been on a good drive and not the usual slow short commute to work. Thanks v much for the advice. Want to take it for another drive now. Lol

It's surprising how many people have this problem, particularly with performance cars which are fitted with 'hard' pads. This is the type of problem which some garages claim requires new discs and pads! It is a good idea to include a good long hill in your weekly driving to regularly get your brakes hot and keep them at peak efficiency. |
