I collected a 118i from Sytner Nottingham yesterday. Is this the most uncomfortable car I have ever driven, well BMW it is. The seat has a silly lever secreted right underneath to move it and is mega uncomfortable. Car has so called comfort mode, would be more comfortable on a bed of nails. Hard and lumpy ride. Gutless performance, with silly options such as sports and even sport plus?
Poor visibility from rear hatch window and annoying wiper. This model did not have a Sat Nav and dealer disabled the fag lighter so no one can plug a sat nav in, not very helpful. Ok its free, but I would not buy one, I would not swap my 1999 E39 523i for this 2015 shopping trolley. What a poor experience. Suit someone who has just passed their test I guess. |

I'd agree really, it's an upmarket Astra but not as pretty. The 3 Series is a decent car but there are just too many about, the interior is cheap and it's too expensive. The 4 Series Coupe is nice though.
Like you, I consider the 5 Series to be the proper BMW. The width of the F10 takes some getting used to but it's a superb car really. I think a 520d is only a couple of grand more than a 320d and you really feel like you get your money's worth. A friend of ours has just bought a Kia thing, a 3 door Coupe that is amazingly good if not overly cheap - but it has a 7 year warranty and is superbly finished. It's this thing: http://www.kia.co.uk/new-cars/range/mid-sized-cars/new-proceed.aspx I think it was about 17k with a couple of options but it really does drive well.

If this was a new 1er then it has become like most other cars (not just BMW) - an overbloated behemoth of what it once was - just like the 3 series and the 5 and 7. Hence why they had to introduce the 1 - to replace the "small" BMW that was once the 3 series. When the 1er gets too big in a few generations time - what's next - the half series maybe

I'm on my 3rd 1 series and actually really like it.
I have had the small engine petrol models as courtesy cars and in basic spec and they are very boring but if you get a good trim, I.E M sport and a decent bhp/torque engine, 120i or 120d and above then they drive and handle very well. I'm not particularly tall or wide so I fit the seats comfortably |

Well to be fair this car is a 118i, but thank god my 520 bhp mobile sofa has all been serviced and given a clean bill of health. Looking forward to the drive home from Nottingham in it.

The 135i is the proper one. But from my time at Stratstones I had a new 120i and thought it was a miserable bloody thing.
The 1 Series directly replaced the 3 Series Compact in 2004/5 which in E46 form was a cracking car for it's time. I never found out how the E87 was a step forward over the Compact because although it had five doors, it had a smaller boot and less rear legroom as well as dramatically inferior visibility.

BMW now produce so many different models and version it all then comes down to use and then fit for purpose - the person that will love that 118 may hate faster bigger cars - thats why they do it as everyone differs - A customer of mine bought an X1 and after 6 months wanted rid as he was used to M3s - he then bought and E46 M3 and he advertised the car on AnyM and it sold in a matter of hours - the man who bought it wanted one that colour that spec for his wife and had been looking for a while - it was perfect for him but not the seller - I drove the X1 round the M25 before that and it did what it was designed to do but didnt float my boat - got to admit I still have a soft spot for the E39 but the 540 - even with a trailer it pulls like a train...but some would hate the fuel - see my point

Yes, comments above are fair. But if you are a fat bloke like me you don't want to look like and elephant on a roller skate. 5 series is a minimum requirement.

I'm sorry you can't compare a 1 series with the E39 they are totally different cars and quite rightly so!
I have a 120d coupe as my daily driver and I have loved it from the day I got it. It comfortable, its fast enough for the daily drive, with enough acceleration to overtake if required with the bonus or great mpg. I would never compare it to my M3 they are just too different and used for their own purpose! Best feeling ever getting in the M3 at the weekend!!! ![]() |

My comparison is about my experience driving the 118i, I am sure it will suit millions of others, but its not for me. I was no doing a daily drive but sitting in it one the M23, M25, M40, M69 and M1 all of which are very congested, it was very uncomfortable.
