Apart from adding a little brightness and maybe contrast, be handy to know how to remove objects such as this flagpole. I have PS CS5, but no idea how to use it to fix this, what do you use for correction?

You can use the clone stamp tool (picture of a stamp). Use the alt key to choose where you'd like to take another part of the photo to cover up the flagpole, then paint away. Or you can use content aware (probably wont work well in this case). You select which part you want to remove, right click - fill - fill with content aware. Or you can use the heal brush tool (picture of a plaster / ), similar to the stamp tool but its more intelligent by mixing what is already there and what you're trying to add (hard to explain). The patch tool (looks like a patch of material) is used by making a selection of what you want to remove and then click and drag it to somewhere that looks similar to the result you're after.  You can also select parts of photos and then copy them to a new layer, move it over the lamp post and then using the layer mask you can delete the unwanted bits!

Stamp tool and possibly that last method would be what I would use in that photo. I hope that made a bit of sense - if in doubt have a play about!

Using the marquee tool, select the area you want to clone out - you'll have to experiment with area size to get best results - (I used roughly about 4 pixels either side of the pole).
Then using Edit>Fill and selecting Use Content Aware, fill the selected area

Below is a very quick edit (< 5 minutes) - a bit more time would give better results
