Since the paper counterpart of the UK driving licence was eliminated a problem has arisen for anyone trying to hire a car in France, as the photocard section does not enable the hire company to access DVLA to see what penalties have been applied to the potential customer over recent years.
One presumes that this requirement will soon become common across the EU, and that anyone with convictions for dangerous driving, excess alcohol, or a series of speeding fines, will be refused hire at normal terms. It is doubtful that those without such a history will see a reduction! As usual with DVLA, no thought was been given to this problem when the paper counterpart was withdrawn, and even though such checks will be made very soon, there appears to be virtually no awareness amongst either car hire companies or the general public. However, from June 8th it will be necessary to obtain a code from DVLA via the gov.uk website, which will enable the car hire company to access the DVLA website and check for major offences before a car is hired. To obtain the code you will also need your National Insurance number and postcode - and as the code is only valid for 72 hours you will have to obtain it close to the date of hiring. Some car hire companies will accept a printout of your code, but this cannot be relied upon. Edited by Mike Fishwick - 05 Jun 2015 at 8:27am |

From what I read Mike, the paper part is still valid until the 8th June so should still be produced if required, after that date the paper part "will no longer have any legal status".

Yes, but the car hire and insurance companies will still be interested in the track record of their prospective customers, although DVLA did not seem to realise it. Such a code on the licence would probably make roadisde checks a little slicker, too. It is amazing how quickly a gendarme can check the status of our licence.
