I'm taking the family on holiday to the South of France in August and just wanted to know if anybody had any experiences good or bad with buying and using a Liber-t tag to pay the tolls on the French Autoroutes? Looking at the offical web site I'll be looking at a cost of 41 euros which includes (20 euros which is a refundable deposit. The rest is made up of a 6 euro management fee, 10 euro non refundable application fee and also a 5 euro monthly active service fee.

We have peage tags in both our cars, but living in France they are very handy.

For someone going on holiday once  a year it is not worth the trouble - just pay by credit card instead.

Use the 'Cartes du Credit' or 'Cartes Bleu' lanes, where you insert the autoroute ticket intothe LH slot - it vanaishes for ever - and then your crdit card intothe RH slot - it comes back after a second or so - and drive away.  The 'Monnie' lanes are usually filled with people trying to get riid of small change, where you can wait for ever.

You do not get a discount, and the use of a credit card is fine.  A tag is really useful if driving a RHD car by yourself, but that's about it.  Even if driving by yourself, it is not a problem to get out of the car and use a credit card - the French understand your problem.  It's not like the UK, where people seem to think that a few secnods delay is a disaster!

I often drive from Calais via the A16/A28 to Rouen, then the A13/N154 to Evereux, Chartres, A71 to Orleans, A10 to Vierzon, then A20 via Chateauroux and Limoges to A20 J55 for Souillac on my way home, and it costs 23 Euros in peage  fees. It is a good mixed route, and does not leave you brain dead.

If you are going to the Provence/Cote d'Azur area, avoid the Parisian Peripheriqe and the A6/A7, as these resemble the M1/M25 in the rush hour.  Take the route via Rouen and Orleans, then the A75 and work from there.  Take at least two days and enjoy the drive, rather than try to make it an endurance run, as do so many Brits.

I've had one for years and find it very useful. However I didn't pay the charges you refer to. The monthly fee is only applicable when in use ie active.

We did not have pay any deposit, and are charged 4 euros for each month in which the tag is used - it must be a preferential system for those resident in la Belle France!

Thanks for the replies gents. We are heading to Provence/Cote d'Azur and with a little one plan to do the trip over 2 days. I was planning on staying in Dijon on the way down as it's what we used to do when I was little and seemed to be a good half way stop although I've not decided which way to come back yet but am open to suggestions. All I know it will be alot more comforatable this time in my X5 (and it's not a bad drive either) as opposed to 5 of us being in a hatchback Cavalier SRI packed for 3 weeks without air con. Never really understood how we did it.

It seems a waste of a good trip not to return through the Alpes de Provence, even if it adds a day to the journey.  Follow the French side of the border with Italy, over the Col de la Bonnette to Barcelonette, then the Col de Vars, Col de l'Izoard, then to Grenoble and back tothe Dijon area, picking up the A26 at Troyes.

This route helps you to avoid the busiest autoroutes around the Avignon-Lyon area, with time at the end of the day to find decent hotels or campsites.  We took our daughter on a similar route when she was almost one year old, and had no problems.
