I never tire of driving in the mountains - it is amazing that these roads were built, and even more so that they are all so well-maintained!  Here are a few more, taken in similar areas:

Climbing the Stelvio Pass as the sun goes down

Evening on the Petit St. Bernard Pass, on the France/Italy border

Red Zed resting on the Furka Pass, central Switzerland. The Rhone Glacier - source of the river which flows through France to the Mediterranean - is in the background.

The Col de Lombardie, between France and Italy - what a road!

Col de Galibier, October 2012 - the fifth highest pass in Europe.

Grand St. Bernard Pass, between Italy and Switzerland, June 2000 - on our way to Munchen for a BMWCC factory tour, travelling the longest way!

Descending the Timmelsjoch Pass, between Italy and Austria - a little-known pass which is one of the more demanding drives.

I hope you have enjoyed these pictures, and that they may encourage you to explore the great passes of Europe!

And no speed cameras, no speed limits, and no double white lines . . . .  those little englanders who believe what they read in the UK press should try driving in Europe, and keeping their eyes open as they do so.

Perhaps then they would finally realise that the enemy of the motorist is the UK government, with its quota-hungry police force, its agencies such as DVLA who are permitted to produce revenue-based instant laws without reference to parliament, and its desperation to catch a few votes from members of pressure groups from Brake to RSPB.
