    Posted: 31 Dec 2013 at 11:17am
Hi, I wonder if anyone can help, I have a 2002 E39 525d sport, I had problems starting it about 3 weeks ago, the engine just whizzed over, I thought it was out of fuel so when it eventually started it i got it to the garage and filled it up, after leaving the garage it wouldn't rev past 3000 revs, I thought it was in limp mode, a couple of miles down the road it revved to 3800, then 4000, then it wouldn't go past 2800 , the revs are fluctuating throughout every press of the accelerator pedal , I've changed the pump in the tank, and also changed the fuel filter in the engine bay, any ideas please, thanks for your time, Gaz

Tell you what, you could also have a problem with a burst / cracked air pipe and the engine is getting unmetered air

Start the engine up and listen for a hissing or sucking sound and try and locate it from there. I share your thoughts and look into the fuel supply of the engine, are the injectors leaking?

I have found when ( at any time hot or cold ) I start it up for the first few seconds its quite happy to rev right in to the red band and hold there, then its as if something kicks in and reduces the revs

Surprised no fault codes who has read it as sounds like resets then goes into limp when driven could be any number of things so would be guessing without more of a steer

Does abs or traction light come on

Also worth checking for any poss bad connections on earths and abs plug etc

But get a proper code reader on it before costing money and time

Could be but that would show on computer if code read also it would not rev ok when reset if unit faulty it would be likely to cut out but guessing again needs proper code read as be something silly as had it before when just a bad connection and sadly that won't show but codes may give a steer

I still believe this is a fuel feed problem,as Neil said its odd no codes are being thrown up. Can you smell Diesel in the engine bay at all?

Brings me back to the codes from the reader as a tps can show various faults but more common in the petrol engine versions ....what codes showed and with what machine

FYI in an e39 it will often show historical codes at least that might give a clue to problem and the decent ones will test sensors and switches as can get expensive just fixing things but if keeping it then long term can't hurt I guess if can afford it now

I have the same problem on my E24. I am advised by the experts to take off the bypass valve and give it a clean and oil.
Temporary fix - let it run until its warmed up and the problem goes away - until the next cold start.
